James Turrell: by Jimena Blazquez Abascal, William P. Banks, Sharon G. Gato, Michael Govan, and James Turrell. Edizioni Charta/NMAC, Milano, 2009
The artist James Turrell was born in Los Angeles, California in 1943. He attended Pomona College and studied psychology and mathematics. After graduating he pursued art and received his MFA at Claremont Graduate School in California. He went on to found a new type of artistic expression which directly deals with light and space as a means for impacting the eye, body, and mind with the force of a spiritual awakening. In this book about Turrell the authors delve into the reasoning and philosophy behind Turrell’s works while specifically looking at his piece Second Wind located in Cadiz Spain. The skyspace takes light and brings it into a more intimate personal space. This experience is supposed to evoke a sense of personal enlightenment and meditation. The book contains essays by the authors, over 40 pictures of the construction and completion of Second Wind, and an interview with Turrell.
